PREMIUM
BONDS
Tax free investment with
no interest but potentially extremely high returns , backed by the
government treasury .
If you have some spare
cash and are not interested in capital growth , but want a no risk
investment that is protected from UK income tax then premium bonds
might be worth a consideration ...
Premium bonds are a kind of UK lottery
, you invest your money , a minimum of £100 sterling and maximum
£30K , then instead of earning interest on the investment
, the pool of profits that the government earns from the combined
investment goes towards cash prizes with a max value of £1M
pounds . Numbers are drawn by ERNIE a computer that selects preium
bond serial numbers at random , so the more bonds you have the more
likely you are to win .
You can put your money in or take it out at any time .
The Catch
Inflation will slowly erode the value of the money you have invested
and if you don't win anything you wil llose out a lot in the long
term as you have no growth .
Age Limit
You need to be over 16 and a UK resident to deposit money yourself
, if you are a minor , your parents can take out premium bonds on
your behalf . Many relatives take them out for christening presents
or for celebrating the birth of a new born baby , and they are also
popular for retired people looking for a bit of a flutter without
loosing their stake .
History Of Premium Bonds
They have been running since 1957 , and some mature investers still
have numbers taking from this date !
The first ERNIE machines were teletape transistor diode technology
, taking up a whole room !
The machines used today are simple PCs , much more poweful of course
- the old machine would not be able to keep up with 23 million numbers
currently in issue .
In June 2005 the number of digits increased to 11 digits to sope
with the huge demand in recent years (partly due to low inflation
and low savings account interest rates).
Security
Backed by HM Treasury they are the safest form of investment other
than National Savings . Numbers are checked by the UK Governement
acturay to ensure complete randomness of drawings .
Overseas Bond Holders

to keep your registered address up to date so the preium bonds people
